The Missing Piece

After we started dating for a few months, we both knew we wanted to get married. I started looking to buy a ring for Kathleen around Christmas, and I knew I wanted to make our engagement very special.

I decided that the day would be Valentine's Day. I hinted to Kathleen that I was going to wait until the summer to propose to her, but I knew I wanted to do it earlier and surprise her.

On Valentine's Day I surprised Kathleen by sending her a dozen red roses. That night we planned to go out for a nice romantic dinner at Potowmack Landing. I told Kathleen that I would pick her up around 6:30 pm. When I arrived at Kathleen's apartment she asked me how my drive was and I said it was no problem. I walked Kathleen outside and she asked me where my car was. I then pointed to the white stretch limo I rented and told her that was our ride for tonight. Kathleen loved the limo. We had champagne and enjoyed the ride.

The dinner at Potowmack Landing was great. We both love seafood and we ate plenty of it. The atmosphere was very romantic. We had a candlelit dinner, a strolling violinist and a great view of the Potomac River.

Prior to Valentine's Day, I had been working on a puzzle which I was going to give to Kathleen for Valentine's Day. She knew that I was working on the puzzle, but I didn't let her see it as I worked on it.

In my apartment I had placed candles throughout the rooms and had the completed puzzle on a table covered with a red cloth. When we arrived back at my apartment, I lit all of the candles and we danced to our favorite song. After the song was finished, I told Kathleen that I loved her and that she was the missing piece in my life. I then pulled out a puzzle piece from my pocket and told Kathleen I wanted her to put the last piece in the puzzle.

Kathleen walked over to the table and unveiled the puzzle. The puzzle was a picture of a little boy down on one knee giving a rose to a little girl. In the place where the last puzzle piece went, I had placed the engagement ring. Kathleen looked at it and was shocked. I then took the ring, got on one knee and asked Kathleen to marry me.
